Cabbage is packed with fiber, vitamins C and K, and powerful antioxidants, making it one of the healthiest vegetables around. But while it’s a great choice for most people, there are certain situations where eating large amounts of cabbage may not be the best idea.

1. People with Thyroid Disorders
Raw cabbage contains natural compounds called goitrogens, which may interfere with iodine uptake when consumed in very large amounts. For most people this isn’t a problem, but individuals with hypothyroidism—especially those with low iodine intake—may benefit from eating cabbage cooked rather than raw and enjoying it in moderation.
2. People Who Frequently Experience Bloating or IBS
Cabbage is high in fiber and contains fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), which can cause gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort in some people, particularly those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Cooking cabbage often makes it easier to digest.
