Nightly Leg Cramps? Discover Why They Happen and How to Stop Them!

Few things are more frustrating than being jolted awake by a sudden, painful cramp in your calf or foot. These episodes, often called “charley horses,” are involuntary muscle contractions that can happen without warning, particularly at night.

Although most nighttime leg cramps are harmless and last only a few minutes, frequent episodes can interfere with sleep and affect your quality of life. Understanding why they happen—and knowing what to do when one strikes—can help you manage them and reduce their frequency.

What Are Charley Horses?

A charley horse is a sudden, involuntary tightening of a muscle. The calf is the most common location, but cramps can also affect the thighs, feet, or other muscles.

A cramp may cause the affected muscle to become hard and extremely painful. The episode can last from several seconds to a few minutes, and the area may remain sore afterward.

Nighttime leg cramps are particularly common during sleep or periods of rest. They can occur in otherwise healthy people, although the risk tends to increase with age.
